Traditional speakers produce sound by using an electromagnet to move a flexible cone back and forth. They use drivers to help translate electrical signals into physical vibrations so that you can hear recorded sounds. A tweeter is the type of speaker driver that produces the highest range frequency. The other two main drivers are woofers and midrange. Basically, a driver moves a flexible cone, or diaphragm, back and forth very quickly to produce sound waves. The diaphragm is normally made of paper, plastic or metal and it's attached to the suspension's wide end. The suspension, also called the surround, is a flexible metal rim that lets the cone move. It's connected to the basket, which is the driver's metal frame. On the narrow end of the cone is a voice coil, which hooks up to the basket via a flexible metal ring that lets the coil move back and forth while still keeping it in place. The difference between a tweeter and the other two types of drivers is mainly size-related. A woofer is the biggest type of driver, and it's meant to create low-frequency sounds. Meanwhile, tweeters are a lot smaller and they make the highest frequency sounds. Not surprisingly, midrange speakers cover the middle part of the spectrum between the woofers and the tweeters. The size of the tweeter dictates the frequency because to make higher frequency waves, the diaphragm has to vibrate faster. It's too hard for a large driver to vibrate fast enough to create the sounds of a tweeter. Often, a stereo will break down its electrical signals into different frequencies, and each of the three types of driver will handle the part assigned to its capabilities. Many times, the drivers are all housed within the same enclosure.

Tweeters are an integral part of most speaker system setups. They either sit separately in multi-speaker arrangements or as part of single-unit systems. But what is a tweeter? A tweeter speaker is a type of speaker designed to produce sound in the higher frequency range. Theyâre important accompaniments for woofers and other speakers unable to reproduce higher-pitched sound frequencies. The best sound setups include tweeters to ensure the perfect listening experience. In the rest of the article, Iâll explain more about tweeter speakers, what they do, and the different types available. Iâll also provide you with some of the best options available today that you can get for your setup. Tweeter Speaker Design Tweeters have a compact design because they produce smaller sound waves. The small cone also means theyâre designed to point directly to the listener. Their sound range is mostly within 3-20 kilohertz, but some manufacturers can implement different limitations. The standard design of a tweeter consists of the following A small magnet with a circular gap on the copper wire voice coil connected to the speaker dome. The speaker assembly is affixed into the gap within the magnet. The dome is held together on its side by some tough but flexible material. Amplified music signal reaches the tweeter via the standard positive+/negative- wiring connections. Once this happens, the voice coil triggers a magnetic field within the magnetic gap region. The reaction causes the tweeter coil and dome to move back and forth, cycling air quickly to trail the signal. A combination of these intricate movements leads to sounds you hear. The Role of Tweeter Speakers As mentioned earlier, tweeter speakers produce trebles and other high-frequency sounds such as synthetic keyboard sounds, cymbals, drum hi-hats, etc. They complement other speakers that arenât designed to replicate such sound. Combined with a subwoofer and standard 2-way speakers, tweeters can help ensure near-perfect sound reproduction. Tweeters are important in music because they ensure listeners hear the full range of sounds in any piece of music or movie. Sound setups, including tweeters, sound more pleasing and more natural compared to those without them. Tweeter Impedance and Power Ratings Explained Impedance describes a speakerâs total electrical resistance to current. The unit is in Ohms. The voice coil in any tweeter speaker features a long amount of wire wound into a coil. The wire has electrical resistance. Impedance rating is important because you need to know what it is to choose the right matching components for your tweeter or the other way round. Mismatched speaker impedance causes one to play at volumes far higher than the other. Generally, home tweeters are rated at 8 ohms, while car options are rated at 4 ohms. However, those numbers are generally an estimate. A tweeter speaker with an 8 ohms rating is most likely a 6-7 ohms speaker. Keep this in mind when itâs time to choose your tweeter speaker. Your tweeters have to match the rated impedance expected from an amplifier. Amplifiers can overheat if used with speakers too low for the design. So, for example, you canât use a 4 ohms tweeter if the amplifier has an 8 ohms rating. On power ratings, the first thing you should know is that tweeter speakers arenât designed to handle the same level of power as other large speakers. Woofers and subwoofers can deal with larger amounts of heat because they all feature a larger voice coil wiring gauge. You should expect around 15W RMS for most home tweeter speakers. Different Types of Tweeters and Dome Materials Tweeter speakers come with domes made of a wide range of materials. For models in the middle or upper range bracket, you may occasionally find aluminum or titanium as the material. Letâs look at tweeters made of these materials in a bit more detail. Mylar or PEI Tweeters The dome in Mylar and PEI tweeters is made of plastics. Youâll find these in budget or coaxial sound setups. Theyâre the affordable option to go with, but theyâre not the best if youâre looking for the most accurate sound replication. You can easily notice the difference when comparing the sound to what youâll hear on a silk dome tweeter.
